Bajaj Chetak to make comeback in India, planned for 2016

Remember the Bajaj Chetak? The scooter was introduced in 1972 as a popular made-in-India motor scooter, but in 2009, Bajaj Auto discontinued it due to declining sales. Now the company has realized the booming scooter industry and to make their presence in the segment, Bajaj Auto is readying an updated Chetak.

At the moment, nothing much is known about the upcoming new Chetak, but the company has re-registered the Chetak brand name and is speculated to be revealed at the 2016 Indian Auto Expo. The new Chetak is believed to have retro styling bits like Vespa, but sport modern running gear. It will of course get a modern frame, suspension and brakes and lots of storage space.

It is not known if the new Chetak is powered by a 125cc or 150cc engine, but the engine will be coupled to an automatic gearbox for sure. The discontinued Chetak had a 2-stroke 145cc engine which was later made into a 4-stroke. It had a maximum power of 7.5 BHP with 10.78 Nm of torque. The scooter could hit a top speed of 80 kmph and had a 4-speed transmission with the shifter and clutch both placed on the left hand.
