The Toyota Innova has been the king of the hill in the MUV segment for many years now. It took over the top spot in the segment when it was first launched and has stayed there ever since. Its sales did not fade even in the face of new MUV’s and MPV’s which were launched by Maruti Suzuki, Honda, Renault etc. Well, Toyota is a manufacturer who always wants to stay on top of the competition and keeps updating its vehicles, and the latest Toyota product to get an update is the Innova.
Making its global debut in Indonesia last-month, it is the first market to sell the second generation MPV, while India is expected to receive the new model in the first quarter of 2016. The 2016 Innova may appear to have only undergone a facelift but looks can be deceiving, because the second-generation Innova actually shares very little of its predecessor’s components, probably only 5% of its components with the outgoing model, which is apparently, a few bolts and screws.
Based on the new IMV ladder frame platform which is shared with the new Fortuner and Hilux Revo, the 2016 Innova puts focus on occupant safety with all variants getting ABS, EBD and three airbags as standard. In order to make the Innova more efficient, it will now use a 2.4-litre instead of the older 2.5-litre diesel engine. The 2393cc, 4-cylinder Turbo-diesel engine also gets a huge bump up in power and now produces maximum power of 147 BHP at 3400RPM and a maximum torque figure of 342 NM between 2200 and 2800 RPM.
Also being made available is a 1998cc 4-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine with maximum power standing at 137 BHP developed at 5700 RPM and 183 NM of torque being generated at 4000 RPM. Both the diesel as well as the petrol engine will be available with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic transmission. With the 2016 Innova, Toyota has introduced drive selection modes, and the driver will be able to choose between three driving modes – Eco, Normal and Power.
The top-of-the-line Innova will come with a host of features such as LED Headlamps, Alloy Wheels, Automatic Air Conditioning, Climate Control, Ambient Lighting, a TFT Information Display in the Instrument cluster, 8-inch touch screen infotainment system and captain seats for the second row as well.
The top-of-the-line variant will be called the ‘Q’ type, the mid-range variant will be called the ‘V’ type and the base variant will be called ‘G’ type. The top-end Q variant adds a pair of side and curtain airbags, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Hill Start Assist to the list.
Surprisingly, the folks at Toyota have already started working on a facelift version of the upcoming 2016 Innova MPV which is now 3-4 years away from the public debut!
