The recent article in AutoCarIndia suggests that Volkswagen India plans to launch more powerful diesel variant of the Polo, the Polo 1.6 GTD. This variant provides a winning combination of performance and fuel economy, and will win the hearts of many performance junkies with the launch of India’s first diesel hot hatch by plonking the Vento’s 1.6-litre diesel motor under the hood.
The performance is likely to be better than the current Vento saloon as the Polo weighs 90kg less. The Polo 1.6 GTD is expected to have a lot more attitude with a body kit, low-profile tyres and other sporty bits as part of the package, spicing the hatch-up. The GTD is the diesel counterpart of GTI, representing VW’s sporty variant.
Volkswagen India plans to launch Polo 1.6 GTD sometime in the first half of 2013 and would command a premium of over Rs. 1 lakh over equally loaded Polo 1.2 TDi variants. As of now, the only diesel hot hatch on-sale in India is the Fiat Punto 90hp.
