8 Ferraris, other cars destroyed in world's costliest crash in Japan

In an unusual accident that took place on Chugoku Expressway in Shimonoseki, southwestern Japan, there was a pile up of a total of 14 vehicles, each of them top-end luxury cars.

What could be one of the most expensive accidents in history, 8 Ferraris, 3 Mercedes Benz, a Lamborghini Diablo, a Nissan GT-R Skyline and a Toyota Prius were involved in a pile up causing extensive damage.  The vehicles were all travelling from Hiroshima to Kyushu when the accident took place.

At 10.15 am on Sunday morning, while all the other vehicles were travelling in one direction it was a Mercedes CL600 that was coming from the opposite direction.  Television footage showed cars in wrecked condition with a pile of broken glass, mangled metal and though none of the drivers were injured the expenses on repairs is bound to be astronomical.  Two Ferrari 355s, two Ferrari 360s, two Ferrari 430s (one of which was a rare Scuderia variant), and a Ferrari 512 were totalled in what has been described as one of the most expensive pileups in history.

The total price of the cars involved is beyond $3 million.

Here’s a video by one of the Japanese TV channels depicting the aftermath. Enjoy, or mourn, as you like.
