Toyota Motor Company is looking at introducing the Hilux pickup truck in India, according to a media report. The company is currently assessing the vehicle to our market.
The Hilux pickup shares the Innova and Fortuner with its underpinnings. It is 5,285 mm long, and has a 3,085 mm wheelbase. Both are more than the MPV and the SUV. It comes with a 1.5 m x 1.5 m rear loading bay.
The Hilux also uses the same parts for engines, transmissions, and suspension as the Innova and Fortuner. However, it uses a leaf spring system rather than coil springs at the rear, as the former is more suitable for handling loads. The 2.4L and 2.8L diesel engines for the pickup are reportedly being considered by Toyota and the latter could produce up to 500 Nm.
Toyota should look locally to mount the Hilux pickup. Since it shares many components with Innova and Fortuner, it should be possible for the company to price it lower than a CBU would have cost. The pickup is estimated to be priced in India between Rs . 15 lakh-Rs. 20 lakh.
Once it comes to our shores the Hilux will compete with the Isuzu D-Max V-Cross.
