The next-gen 2020 Mahindra Thar (codename: Mahindra W501) appears to be close to a debut judging by the minimal camouflage on the production-ready car spotted here, despite not unveiling at 2020 Auto Expo.
The 2020 Mahindra Thar has been spied on many occasions, but the latest picture is of great interest to us as it looks like the highly awaited lifestyle SUV is finally very close to its market launch. The spyshot shows a red-colored model on its way to a dealer stockyard.
One of the first things to mention is that this particular model has a hard-top but it will also get a soft-top version and it is expected to launch in July this-year. Anyways, discounting the roof section does not discredit the value of this spyshot because whatever roof you want, what really matters here is that the new SUV is finally near its official launch.
The 2020 Mahindra Thar will have an evolved version of the Wrangler-like design and will look more modern, especially if you compare it to predecessors such as the first-gen Thar, Classic or MM540. The latest model will retain the iconic, true-blue ‘Jeep’ look that many wish for. The new touches will include some sleeker doors, LED lighting fixtures replacing halogen units and LED DRLs on the front fenders.
In addition to the new hard-top option, the 2020 Mahindra Thar will also get front-faced rear seat bench, which is something that will make the cabin a tad more upmarket. Some of new features include automatic climate control, cruise control, touchscreen infotainment system, color MID display, etc.
The 2020 Mahindra Thar is likely to be powered by a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine with 140 hp output. Thanks to the declining demand for diesel-powered vehicles, the company might also introduce a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine with a maximum output of 163 hp at the option, especially for international markets.
A 6-speed manual transmission would be standard, while an optional 6-speed automatic transmission could be provided, making the dream of a Mahindra Thar a reality for urban customers. A part-time four-wheel drive system will likely be standard. The 2020 Thar will be underpinned by the company’s ladder-frame design ZEN3 which should contribute to more positive dynamics.
