It is a known fact that Maruti Suzuki are assembling the next generation of their popular Wagon R hatchback for India. The next-gen Wagon R is scheduled to be launched here in early 2019. There is also an electric version in the pipeline, but we have to wait until 2020 for it to be launched.
The next-generation Wagon R is already being sold by Suzuki in the Japanese market. It is powered by a small 660cc engine there and is part of the Kei Car category. However, it’s Indian equivalent will get the 1.0 litre K10 series engine, currently seen on the Alto.
Maruti Suzuki also have plans of launching an electric version of the hatchback. The first prototype of the car was showcased at the recently concluded Move Summit held in New Delhi. It is expected to be coming here in 2020, following the electric versions of the Alto and the Celerio.
Maruti Suzuki have not yet spoken about introducing a CNG variant of the car. The current Wagon R is being offered in a CNG variant and it’s hard to ignore it as well on the next-gen model. Maruti Suzuki will give the new Wagon R quite a few features.
These include ABS, dual airbags, LED projector headlamps and DRL’s, and possibly a touchscreen infotainment system. When launched, the new Wagon R will rival the likes of the Hyundai Santro, Tata Tiago and the Renault Kwid. The Wagon R has been a strong seller for the company for quite a while now, and we can expect the next-generation model to carry forward the legacy of its predecessors.
