VW India has recently launched the facelifted version of the Polo in the country with prices starting at Rs 4.99 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) and delivery will commence from next-month. This is the first refreshment given to the premium hatch since its Indian debut about five years back.
Inspired from its European cousin, the Polo facelift comes with some minor updates inside-out. At the front gets a new grille with a chrome strip running along the base, redesigned headlights are double barrel units and a restyled front bumper with a larger air dam and integrated fog lamps and cornering lights. At the rear is a pair of revised tail lamps, a new bumper with a reflector at each end and different number plate housing. The 10-spoke alloy wheel is new and looks classy.
On the inside, the facelifted Polo gets a new multi-function steering wheel with piano black detailing, a centre console with matte silver inserts and new fabric for the seats. The instrument cluster is retained with some noticeable changes including multi information display which is now more detailed and the illumination is no more red. The dashboard layout is similar, but now gets two-tone colours instead of the black-only theme of the old car.
The major difference lies in the heart, an all-new 1.5-litre diesel engine will be doing the duty, replacing the earlier 1.6-litre TDi mill. This new entrant diesel comes in two different states of tunes namely 89bhp and 104bhp, currently only 89bhp engine is on-sale, while the more powerful variant 104 bhp will make debut in GT TDI. The petrol version gets a 1.2-litre, MPI engine from the old car spitting out 74bhp. Both versions are equipped with a 5-speed manual gearbox.
As far as safety is concerned, the Polo facelift gets the ABS (Anti-Lock-Braking-System) as standard on all variants except the base one. As they are touting this as the safest premium hatch in the country the car bags four star Euro-NCAP rating for adult occupants. And at the launch ceremony, VW India also announced that the facelift variants of the Polo GT TDI, the Polo GT TSI and the CrossPolo will be making its way in September-2014.
