Fiat India to launch small car for India

Italian car maker Fiat is planning to introduce a new model in small car, which could be launched in the Indian small car market somewhere in 2012. However the Fiat India plans to be very aggressive in 2012, by launching facelifts of both the Linea and Grande Punto, followed by a small car

“There are different routes and opportunity to launch a model in India and the completely built unit route is one of them. Every route is open to us and we are still evaluating. The small car is under development. We had announced earlier that our intention is to launch it in 2012. The exact timing and details will be shared when we will be ready with the product,” Rajeev Kapoor, president and CEO, Fiat India, said.

The small car is been developed at Fiat’s Italy R&D center in Turin, with inputs from Fiat’s Indian engineers in Delhi. The small car will have 80-85% local content and will be manufactured at the company’s facelity in Ranjangaon, Maharashtra. Fiat’s small car expected to unveil at the 2012 auto expo.

On the other hand, the Fiat Small Car could take on the likes of the Maruti Alto, Chevrolet Spark and the Hyundai Santro Xing. The Fiat small car will be positioned right below the Grande Punto and will sit below the Palio as an entry level small car. It will feature both petrol and diesel engines and will be priced between Rs. 3-5 lakhs, helping Fiat increase its revenues through volume sales.
