Maruti Suzuki has just launched the most awaited hatchback of the year, the New Swift. While it is inspired by the old Swift, it is a completely new car based on an all new platform. The changes are not confined to the outside, with the car getting all new interiors. The car will be available with 1.2 litre petrol and 1.3 litre diesel engines. The petrol K-series engine get variable valve timing now, boosting the power up to 87PS (an increase of 2PS) and torque to   114Nm (an increase of 1Nm). The DDiS diesel still retains the same power figures of 76PS and 190Nm but with a slight remap resulting in better efficiency. The petrol is expected to give a mileage of 18.6kmpl and the diesel, 22.9kmpl. “We have launched the new Swift at a time when there was a significant demand for the outgoing model. I am confident that the new Swift will create new benchmarks with its improved fuel efficiency, stylish and sportier looks and high performance,” Shinzo Nakanishi, MD and CEO, Maruti Suzuki India, said. By this morning Maruti had registered 50,000 pre-launch bookings in dealerships across India. Shockingly 80% of the bookings were for diesel variants while the remaining was gobbled up by petrol. That clearly shows the how much diesel takes precedence over petrol variants. The production capacity of the Swift has been increased from 12,000 to 17,000 units per month.
