The MPFI petrol engine is supposed to be derived from the Polo whereas the diesel variant will equip a new 800cc turbocharged motor with two cylinders, producing around 50 BHP of power.
The car will be positioned below the Volkswagen Polo and will compete against the Maruti Wagon R, Hyundai Santro and others from the same segment. The Indian launch will take place in 2012-13 with the car going to production in Indian market almost more than a year after its global unveiling in Paris.
Refresher – The Up is the replacement for the Lupo which was a popular small car in South America and this car is said to be the first global hatchback targeted at emerging markets with the Indian and Chinese market to be the most promising ones. The small car under Polo will give the company more volumes and also help the German automaker in reaching their target of becoming the world’s largest automaker by 2018.
