There are Volkswagen Polos and then there’s the 189 hp Volkswagen Polo GTI. If you are not happy with the performance of the regular Polo, then the Polo GTI is the best option for you if you seek a powerful set of wheels in a small package.
Priced at Rs. 25.99 lakh, the sale of Polo GTI in India will be limited to only 99 examples. The bookings have already commenced on Volkswagen’s official website. The Polo GTI is positioned between the Fiat Punto Abarth, VW Polo GT TSI and imported, expensive performance hatchbacks like the Mini Cooper S and Abarth 595 Competizione.
With Polo GTI, the company seeks to maximise brand name rather than sales, having overpriced. However, this niche offering from VW could appeal to young driving enthusiasts. Coupled with the 3-door bodystyle, the GTI easily differentiates it from the regular Polo hatchbacks. Other add-ons include sportier front and rear bumpers, new headlamps, a front grille with the GTI badge, dual chrome-tipped exhausts, and 16-inch alloy wheels.
Now we come to the point, the Polo GTI is packed with a 1.8-litre TSI engine that develops 189 BHP and 250 Nm of torque. This engine is mated to a 7-speed DSG gearbox with steering-mounted paddle shifters, sending power to front wheels. Volkswagen claims that the GTI can sprint from 0-100 KMPH sprint in 7.2 seconds, and touch a top speed of 233 KMPH. Other changes to the Indian market include suspension tuning and better dust-proofing.
