In April 2013, Volkswagen India launched the hot hatch Polo GT with a 1.2-litre TSI petrol engine, today the company launched another version of the Polo hatchback, the Polo GT TDI. Yesterday, we shared the images of this Polo GT TDI shot from almost all angles. The Polo GT TDI borrows the 1.6-litre TDI diesel engine that also does duty in the Volkswagen Vento and Skoda Rapid.
On the Polo 1.6 GT TDI, the engine is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox as standard, unlike its petrol counterpart, which is only offered with 7-speed automatic DSG gearbox, and also no auto-box on option. Sadly, the Polo GT TDI comes with an ARAI certified fuel efficiency figure of 19.78 Kmpl, which curiously is lower than that of the Vento diesel’s 20.54 Kmpl.
With its 1.6-litre 4-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, which produces 105 bhp and 250 Nm of torque, this means that power delivery is same as that of petrol version, but the diesel offers an extra torque of 75 Nm, plus the Polo GT TDI is the most powerful diesel hatchback in its segment and has been engineered to provide unmatched performance combined with excellent fuel economy.
Looks wise the Polo GT TSI, the Polo GT TDI looks identical to regular Polo, the only external clues to differentiate the car will be GT badging on the grille and GT and TDI badging on the bootlid. It even has the same 15-inch alloy wheels as the regular Polo Highline and Polo GT TSI. These changes apart, the Polo 1.6 GT TDI is similar to the Highline variant, filled with smoked headlamps.
On the inside, the seats get sportier black and grey fabrics with contrast stitching like the Polo GT TSI, climate control and a new 2-DIN audio system that incorporates USB, aux-in, an SD card reader and Bluetooth connectivity. It also gets a leather-wrapped steering wheel, gearshift knob and handbrake lever. Twin airbags and ABS+EBD are standard safety features.
Like the Polo GT TSI, the Polo GT TDI too comes with, three exciting colors Flash Red, Candy White, and Deep Black. As we mentioned yesterday, the Polo GT TDI is priced at Rs 8.28 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai) & Rs 9.60 lakh (on-road, Mumbai), and is priced at Rs 8.08 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). All in all, this is one good product from Volkswagen India, but then again, the price is a little too much.
