Volkswagen raised the curtains off its first sub-four meter compact sedan in India with the global launch of the VW Ameo at the Auto Expo 2016. It is expected to be available to its buyers by the mid of this year. Based on the Polo hatchback Ameo has a high percentage of localization compared to any other VW models in order to lower the cost and will be manufactured at the company`s plant in Chakan, Pune.
The exterior of the Ameo receives design cues from the Polo and the Vento specially the front which houses the narrow and angular head-lamps similar to the Polo. The Ameo will have a dual tone black and beige interior with silver trim around the AC vents and the central console. It will also be equipped some of the first-in-class features like rain sensing wipers, static bending head-lamps, rear view camera, VW’s MirrorLink system, auto dimming internal mirror, alloy wheels, automatic AC and a rear AC vent and cruise control. The list also includes safety features likes ABS, EBD, and dual front airbags.
The Ameo will be powered by the same 1.2-litre MPI petrol engine and the 1.5-litre TDI diesel that is used in the Polo. The transmission options will also be the same as in the Polo, a 5-speed manual gearbox will be available as a standard although the 7-speed DSG housed in the Polo GT and top end variant of the Vento diesel will be available as an option.
Upon launch the Ameo will compete against the likes of Swift Dzire, Honda Amaze, Tata Zest, Hyundai Xcent and Ford Aspire.
