Finally wait for the much awaited Tata Safari Storme comes to an end, Tata Motors today has officially launched the new Safari Storme. The Safari Storme was first seen at Auto Expo 2012, it is not only better in terms of looks, but also deliver a superbly improved performance, thanks to a range of performance enhancing features. The previous generation Safari will be sold alongside the Storme and depending on the market conditions, the company may look at revising its prices.
The Safari Storme is not only a facelift, but also feature changes, improved transmission and performance SUV to compete with modern SUVs which are threatening its place in the market. Borrowing underpinnings from the Aria, the Storme sports a ladder-frame chassis and revised suspension. Under the hood, the familiar 2.2-litre common rail diesel engine still makes 140PS but the company claims that it has been reworked upon. The 5-speed gearbox has also been revised.
The Safari Storme is offered in 4 variants namely LX, EX, VX and VX Four wheel drive (4×4). The four-wheel drive system offered with the top-end variant is an electronic-shift-on-the-fly (ESOF) mechanism that enables a driver to shift from 2WD to 4WD or vice-versa on the go. Yet it is highly fuel efficiency at 14kmpl in the 4×2 variant and 13.2kmpl in the 4×4 variant. The Safari Strome 4×2 weighs 2000kgs, whereas 4×4 weighs 2095 kgs.
Changes in the exterior include the new bumper, honeycomb grille with a large chrome strip and well designed fog lamps with chrome at the front; newly designed alloy wheels, sporty lines and wide body side cladding at the side profile; and twin chrome-tipped exhausts, high mounted spoiler and new windshield at the rear certainly give it a much premium and executive feel like its elder Land Rover siblings (for me). However, the trademark tailgate mounted spare wheel will now be residing on floor pan of rear portion.
The quality of interior has been improved substantially with new dashboard, soft touch plastic, and wood and leather inserts. The inside space offered in Safari Storme is best in class, and what adds glitters to the gold is its top end model’s leather upholstered seats. It also manages to retain the previous-gen Safari’s key quality – passenger comfort. The car feels much better than Scorpio but loses out to XUV 500 which feels a class apart from inside.
The company offers disk brakes on all four- wheels in the new Safari Storme. For making accurate braking, this beast features ABS with EBD and brake assist. Many other safety features are there which includes dual SRS airbags for driver and front passenger, reverse camera mounted on inside rearview mirror, Electronic Stability Program and traction control for better grip while off roading. The Safari Storme is also fitted with PES headlamps for better illumination and unwanted glare.
The Safari Storme is introduced in 6 stunning colors namely Pure White, Black, Red, Bronze, Pearl White and Champagne. While the initial warranty is of 3 years-100,000 Kms, there is an option of extending it by 1 year-50,000 Kms. It will be available in Tata Motors’ 282 dealerships and 33 exclusive UV dealerships across India.
