The Compact SUV segment is probably the most lucrative market in the Indian Automobile Industry today. A few big manufacturers have already launched their compact SUV’s and many others are trying to develop and put on sale their own Compact SUV as soon as they can, in this segment which was first kick started by the Renault Duster a few years ago.
Among the domestic manufacturers trying to get into this segment are Tata and Maruti Suzuki, while Mahindra already launched their contender for this segment, the TUV 300. Maruti Suzuki might launch a car based on the XA-Alpha concept and Tata Motors too might launch their compact SUV based on one of the concepts displayed by them at the 2014 Auto Expo.
At the 2014 Auto Expo in Delhi, Tata motors displayed a concept called the Nexon and Tata is now planning a production version of the Compact SUV which might be code-named Osprey. There are reports implying that the Osprey/Nexon will be using the same drivetrain as the Tata Zest and Tata Bolt hatchbacks, including the petrol and diesel engines and even the transmissions, as a result of this, the Tata Osprey/Nexon will be manufactured with a manual transmission or an AMT transmission.
Once launched, the Tata Osprey/Nexon will compete against the Ford Ecosport, the Renault Duster, the Mahindra TUV 300, and the Nissan Terrano etc. The company will be loading the Nexon to the brim with features as it is the latest trend we have seen in cars manufactured by Tata Motors.
The Tata Osprey/Nexon might be launched in early or mid 2017.
