Earlier this-year, Yamaha Motors with Bollywood actor John Abraham unveiled a prototype scooter named as ‘Ray’ at the 2012 Auto Expo in Delhi. On the looks of it, Yamaha Ray has stylish looks that would floor the fairer sex. The Scooter is said to be powered by a 125cc four stroke engine which would be capable of producing a power of 9 bhp.
Now Motor Vikatan on FB page has posted a spy picture of the Ray 125cc scooter with UP number plates caught testing in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. It is unclear as to why a test mule of the Yamaha Ray 125 automatic scooter has been spotted so far down south India. While Yamaha Ray Scooter will be produced at Yamaha’s plant up north at Surajpur facility in Uttar Pradesh, alongside the brand’s various motorcycle models.
From the images, the scooter looks production ready with the lights and indicators getting a clear lens treatment as opposed to the smoked out looks of the concept version showcased at 2012 Auto Expo. But the scooter seems to retain most of the cues from the concept version and look like a regular scooter.
The Ray is mainly targeted for the feminine group but it may also attract the masculine group due its edgy style and it surely looks as if Yamaha might want to take on a female endorser as well. Though Yamaha India has not yet clarified its stand on the status of the launch of the scooter but with these spy shots, it seems the launch isn’t far away.
Yamaha Ray would be a direct competitor to Suzuki’s latest Suzuki Swish. Swish is also powered by an engine of pretty similar capacity of 124 cc, which delivers a power of 8.58 bhp. Suzuki Swish has more neutral looks in comparison to the Yamaha Ray. It is also expected that this ride would be on the lines of Suzuki Access 125 in terms of pricing too.
