The Hyundai i20 sedan might still be far from becoming a reality, a test mule of the sedan derivative of Hyundai HB20 hatchback was recently spotted testing in Brazil. The HB20S will be the sedan version of the HB20 hatchback – which is sold solely in the Brazilian market.
The HB20 has met with great success in Brazil but Hyundai is certainly not among those to sit back and relax on their laurels. Its faces a stiff compition from the the Chevrolet Onix and is close to getting a sedan variant (Prima) for Brazilian market and it is hence only the clever move for Hyundai was to come up with the sedan version of the HB20.
The front half of the HB20 sedan will be same as the hatchback version but will come with big changes starting from the B pillar.
The sedan has the characteristic Hyundai cues we’ve come to expect: flared headlamps, broad front grille and a sweeping roofline. In fact, you can call it an Elantra mini!
The car will come with wrap around tail lamps, a beefy rear bumper and number plate housing on the trunk lid.
It is being said that the car will be called as the Hyundai HB20S and will be powered by 1.0-litre and 1.6-litre flex fuel engines.
The Hyundai HB20 sedan will be launched soon after the Prisma’s Brazil car market launch in March. The HB20S will not be coming to India however. If Hyundai decides that they need a small sedan (read sub-4m) that slots below the Verna, it is likely that it would be built on the next generation i10 platform.
However, one cannot help but feel envious of the Brazilians; as they seem to be getting a lot of really good value products of late from all brands!
