We have already reported that Nissan has confirmed bringing back the Datsun brand for emerging markets like Brazil, Russia, India, China and Indonesia. Now the FC report suggests, Datsun is said to be planning to launch five car models in India by 2015. All Datsun cars will sit below Nissan’s existing offerings and will be a separate brand offering a lower entry price mainly for first time car buyers. Previously Nissan used to sell cars in the United States under the Datsun brand name.
According to the report, Datsun is expected to target the small car, MPV, and MUV segment in India besides the SUV segment that is the hot favorites this time. With this, Datsun small car (codenamed I2) will take on Hyundai Eon, Maruti Alto besides other entry level cars in India. Auto industry experts believe that Datsun has the capacity to change the face of Indian car market following the low cost cars as well as cars that target the masses. The names of Datsun cars scheduled for India launch are still unclear.
In addition to this, in the MUV segment, Datsun offering will be competing with Maruti Ertiga and upcoming Chevrolet Enjoy. While on the compact SUV segment, Datsun car will be targeting the Ford Ecosport, Renault Duster and upcoming Maruti XA Alpha. Another car to be launched by Datsun will include a compact sedan that could take on Maruti Swift Dzire and Tata Indigo CS apart from the upcoming Mahindra Verito CS. With these offerings in place it is expected that Datsun cars will be able to put in an affordable car in every segment and thus being a tried, tested and robust brand just as Nissan is there is high possibility that it will be able to make its own space in the country.
