Looks like French brand Renault has understood the Indian market much more than our home-based car manufacturer. After the success of Duster, now the company has launched a much-required compact A-segment crossover called ‘Renault Kwid’ at a competitive price of Rs 2.56 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
It not only fits budget-conscious people, but also fulfil their requirement with SUV-like high-ground clearance, 25.17 Kmpl mileage and best-of-all is affordable pricing. Renault has managed to price this hatchback aggressively and much lower than they themselves promised Rs. 3-4 budget, it is possible because of 98% localization.
Renault has left no stone unturned in enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the interior as well as the exterior. The SUV-like styling, the body cladding and bulky wheel arches give it a muscular look. It can be personalised with different accessories that further take the styling quotient a notch higher. Customisation is not limited to exterior, whereas the interior too get the option with impressive equipment and feature list.
On the inside, the Kwid gets dual-tone dashboard, digital instrument cluster with chrome accents, front power windows, an upper glove compartment, 7″ touchscreen infotainment system with Navigation, Bluetooth, USB and Aux-in, and a roof mic. It also comes with remote key, while a driver airbag is optional – yes, singular, but sadly no ABS option.
Under the hood, the Kwid is powered by a 0.8-litre three-cylinder petrol unit that makes a humble 53 hp at 5,678 rpm and 72 Nm of torque at 4,386 rpm, mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. Thanks to the lightweight construction, the car weighs only 660kg and Renault claims that it can achieve an ARAI certified figure of 25.17 kmpl.
A total of 6 variants are on offer – STD, RXE, RXE (O), RXL, RXT and RXT (O). The Kwid will be available in 5 colours – Fiery Red, Ice Cool White, Moonlight Silver, Outback Bronze and Planet Grey. And comes with a 2 year/50000 km standard warranty, extendable upto 4 years/80000 km.
The Kwid directly competes with the India’s largest selling car – Maruti’s Alto 800 and Hyundai’s Eon head-on. At this price, it will surely attract Tata Nano buyers too.

- Kwid STD: Rs. 2.57 lakh
- Kwid RXE: Rs. 2.89 lakh
- Kwid RXE (O): Rs. 2.95 lakh
