Renault India has definitely learnt how to make it big in the Indian market, using small cars. Since it’s launch, the Renault Kwid has taken in more than 1,00,000 bookings, making it an instant success and taking the waiting period into months.
The Renault Kwid has made its mark on the entry-level hatchback segment in India, even though it is categorized as a micro SUV, but Renault India is not done yet.
Renault had displayed a couple of new concept variants of the Kwid at the 2016 Indian Auto Expo and while the Kwid Climber and the Kwid Racer looked like they were displayed just to draw the attention of the crowds, there was another variant which was displayed which looked all set for its market launch. And now we have information that it will be launched by June-2016.
Renault displayed the Kwid 1.0, which is hailed to be a more powerful version of the Kwid currently on sale. The Kwid is presently powered by a tiny 799cc, 3-cylinder, petrol engine with a maximum power output of 54 PS and a peak torque output of 72 NM which is adequate enough for a car of it’s size, but Renault has gone a step ahead to give us enthusiasts a car which will be fun to drive in all probability.
The Renault Kwid 1.0 will be powered by a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine which is basically a bored out version of the current 0.8-litre engine and it will feature a higher compression ratio to make it more powerful. While we do not have any solid information about the specs of the engine, we can safely say that the maximum power figure will be in the range of 65-70 PS.
Renault had also displayed a Kwid 1.0 Easy-R AMT at the Auto Expo, which was basically a Kwid 1.0 with an AMT gearbox doing the transmission duties and this variant too will be launched, but not immediately. The Kwid 1.0 when launched in June will feature a 5-speed manual gearbox and this will be the only option for a few months.
The Kwid 1.0 Easy-R will be launched around the festive season in October-November, 2016. Looks like Renault is all set to take the entry-level hatchback segment by storm, all over again.
