Peugeot is one of the brands that are willing to start their operations in India. The French automaker will begin its second innings in the Indian market from 2020. As of now, Peugeot have inaugurated a new engine manufacturing plant in Tamil Nadu.
Located in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, the plant has been built with an investment of Rs.600 crores. This was done in association with the CK Birla group, who is their associate partner for India. Work for this plant begun in 2016, immediately after Groupe PSA, the parent company of Peugeot-Citroen, announced their plans to enter the Indian market.
During its first phase, the plant will be developing as many as 2 lakh BS-VI compliant engines and 3 lakh transmission units per year. Mr. Carlos Tavares, chairman of Groupe PSA and CK Birla, chairman of the CK Birla Group, were also present on this occasion. The engines and transmission units produced here will also be sold in markets abroad.
In 2016, Peugeot purchased the rights for the iconic Ambassador sedan from Hindustan Motors. It was bought for Rs.80 crore, and we can expect the Ambassador to make a return to the Indian market soon. Other than that, Peugeot are lining up quite a few launches for India, including a hatchback, sedan and a mid-size SUV.
