India’s largest car manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki India recently rolled out the much awaited Alto 800 as the company’s next ‘people’s car’ and now the latest news coming in is about the tall boy WagonR’s diesel variant, which is likely to launch in mid 2013, again a mass segment vehicle. It shows the company’s seriousness towards bringing in as much fuel efficient cars as it can for the markets like India, in fact most economies today demand cheaper and highly fuel efficient vehicles.
Initial Success of the compact vehicles across the globe proves that the future belongs to compact vehicles, and that has been the reason why even luxury car makers including Audi, Mercedes-Benz, BMW and others today are betting on compact vehicles.
If we talk about Maruti Suzuki India alone, it has got the maximum budget cars in its portfolio, and is now working on various new budget cars that includes Alto K10 facelift, new age WagonR and some more. It is also working on an 800cc diesel engine, which might power many of its entry-level car to make them even more fuel efficient.
Under the hood, Maruti Suzuki WagonR diesel will have a 1000cc diesel mill, on which Fiat is currently working on for MSI. In fact Maruti Suzuki India’s Managing Director has recently given hints about the same in a statement, which reads as “At the moment, we have a 1.3-liter diesel engine. Fiat is working on 1000 cc engines also. We don’t know the timeline, but surely, we will get these for our smaller cars,”
Expected to launch in later 2013, the all new Maruti Suzuki WagonR Diesel is likely to offer the mileage close to 25kmpl, however nothing on the specifications and other details have been disclosed by the company as of now. On the other hand, Hyundai is also working on the diesel variant of its flagship hatchback, i10, so we can expect to see a healthy battle between the two giants.
