Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) is in the process of making its best-selling hatchback Maruti Swift even more attractive than before by launching Maruti Swift Sport. But India gets a toned down version of Swift Sport because if they launch the international variant in India, it will be as expensive as BMW X1 SUV.
Internationally, Suzuki Swift Sport is available with a 1.6- litre M16A engine that generates peak power of 135 PS, but due to higher import duties in India, this model won’t be feasible in the Indian auto industry. The company is planning of launching Swift Sport in India with either a 1.4-litre petrol which powers Ertiga MUV or the 1.6-litre petrol which powers SX4 sedan.
Suzuki Sport with a 1.6-litre engine from the SX4 will be launched in a semi hatchback segment and will possess 105 PS and 153 Nm torque. The 1.4- litre engine will generate 100 PS power and will be seen with new engine upgrades and a new body kit, stiffer suspensions, rugged brakes and Traction Control System besides a number of internal and external features which will make heads turn. In such a case, what India may get is a low on power Swift Sport that has the looks but lacks the power under the hood.
Pricing is not yet revealed but if the Suzuki Sport has to contend with Polo and Fabia, we feel prices should be in the range of Rs 800,000. If you remember at the 2012 Delhi Auto Expo earlier this year, Maruti had showcased the intentional variant of Swift Sport along with its hybrid compatriot.
