The MUV market has grown by 50% in the last year and every manufacturer out there wants to be a part of this growth. The Toyota Innova is the king of the hill right now and Maruti Suzuki made the Ertiga with intentions of completely taking over the MUV market in India, and even though the Ertiga is doing quite well in terms of sales numbers, it could not hold a candle to the mighty Toyota Innova which even though extremely expensive, still sells enough to rule the MUV market in India. So it is now clear to Maruti Suzuki, that to reign the MUV market, size does matter and making a car like MUV will not work in India.

According to LiveMint, Maruti Suzuki has now begun working on an MUV, codenamed ‘RX’, and this MUV is directly targeted at the Innova. The RX is still in the initial stages and even the design has not yet been finalised. Maruti Suzuki has been in talks with vendors and suppliers about the new MUV, and even though product details haven’t been revealed, Maruti Suzuki has confirmed to the vendors that they would be making the MUV indeed.

As far as the design is concerned, Maruti Suzuki is still confused as to which type of design they should opt for, a full blown utility vehicle look or a crossover look. Also, Maruti Suzuki does not have an engine suitable for large C+ segment MUV’s right now, but they are developing an in-house 1.6-litre engine for future use, and given the fact that a car takes at least 4 years to go from the design stage into the production phase, Maruti might completely finish development on their 1.6-litre engine and plonk it into the RX.

The RX  will be positioned above the Ertiga, and we expect This MUV to be launched by late-2016 or early-2017
