The car you’ve all been waiting for, the Maruti Suzuki Celerio diesel launches today. Now for a short re-cap on what the Celerio diesel has to offer.
Firstly, the Celerio diesel will debut Maruti’s ingenuously developed diesel engine, a two-cylinder unit displacing 793 cc producing a peak power of 47 bhp @ 3500 rpm and a max torque of 125 Nm @ 2000 rpm. This will be the lightest engine in its class weighing just 89 kg, making it the smallest diesel engine in the passenger car segment. Thanks to the all aluminium engine block!
The highlights of this diesel engine doesn’t end here, this engine will deliver an ARAI-rated fuel economy of 27.62 kmpl, which makes it India’s most fuel efficient diesel passenger vehicle. Furthermore, this tiny motor delivers more torque as compared to what the diesel heart of Swift delivers. This could imply that the Celerio diesel will be fun to drive, and have a better pickup as compared to Swift diesel.
Variant-wise, the Celerio diesel will be identical to its petrol counterpart and offered in 4 variants – LDi, VDi, ZDi and ZDi (O). The LDi variant gets AC and power steering, while dual airbags, ABS, foglights, alloy wheels, a Bluetooth-compatible music system with steering mounted audio controls will be seen on the ZDi (O) variant. However, the Celerio diesel will not be offered in the EZ Shift automated manual transmission (AMT).
The Celerio diesel is likely to be the most affordable diesel passenger cars in the country priced Rs 60k – 70k more than the petrol variants, putting the price in the range of Rs 4.6 – Rs 5.7 lakhs (ex-showroom, New Delhi). It will directly compete with the likes of Hyundai Grand i10, Chevrolet Beat and Tata’s upcoming Kite.
