Mahindra, along with Korean automaker SsangYong, are developing a full-size SUV for the Indian market. This is expected to be based on the next-gen SsangYong Rexton, and will carry a Mahindra badge. It is likely to be christened the XUV700 and would be launched by the end of this year.
Recently, the car was spotted undergoing testing without wearing any camouflage. The XUV700 is seen holding a high ground clearance and a wide shoulder line. It will be marketed as a 7-seater and is built on a new body on frame chassis from SsangYong.
We can expect the Mahindra XUV700 to arrive with a host of new features. These include a 9.2 inch touchscreen infotainment system, electrically adjustable front seats, dual-zone climate control, ambient lighting, cruise control and so on. On the safety front, it will get as many as 7 airbags, ABS with EBD, traction control, hill hold assist and ESP to name a few.
As far as the engine is concerned, the XUV700 will employ a 2.2-litre, four-cylinder, diesel engine. This engine is capable of giving 178 BHP of power and 420 Nm of torque. It will come mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission.
Prices for the XUV700 are expected to start from Rs. 22 lakh for the base model and go all the way to Rs. 28 lakh for the top models. The XUV700 will rival the likes of the Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavor and the Isuzu MU-X. It remains to be seen whether the XUV700 can find some takers when it goes on sale by the end of this year or not.
