All-new China-bound 2013 Volkswagen Santana unveiled

With nearly four million units sold, the Volkswagen Santana is one of the most successful models in China. The sedan has a record 4 million units sold in its 29 years of existence on the Chinese roads. And now the company has introduced the new Santana is fully re-developed with styling which resembles Volkswagen’s family look.

Although the Volkswagen Santana is a China-specific model, the launch of the car was held in Germany and not in China with the presence of Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG. The Santana will be produced at Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive in China and will hit the showrooms by end-2012.

The Santana features include such key details as ABS, front, side and head airbags, ESC electronic stabilisation programme, air conditioning or automatic climate control, electric sliding sunroof, alloy wheels, parking sensors and leather upholstery – which are either standard or optional depending on the equipment line.

Under the hood, the new Santana is powered by 2 engine choices. There is the 1.4-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine that hands out 89bhp while the 1.6-litre petrol engine of the same configuration hands out 108bhp. In China, the Volkswagen Santana is available in the Trendline, Comfortline and Highline versions. Price starts from 53,100 yuan (approx Rs. 4.6 lakh INR) to 78,800 yuan (approx Rs. 6.8 lakh).
