Tata Motors is all set to make its foray into the electric car market with an electric version of the super-successful Tiago hatchback. The Tiago electric will be the first of Tata Motor’s electric cars to go on-sale, which could launch many more electric products in the future.
Report have come that Tata Motors has been developing an electric model of the Tiago for quite some time. Partnering with UK-based Tata Motors European Technical Centre (TMETC), the project is all set to see the light of the day sometime next-month. The company may give the Tiago electric the same features as seen on the Bolt BEV prototype, which was supposed to be Tata’s first electric vehicle.
Now it seems that Tata Motors wants to cash on the Tiago’s popularity and give buyers and electric option as well, which gives it an edge over its rivals. The government plans to implement electric vehicles and also surely helped, with more electric vehicles to be launched are under the pipeline. Tata might use the Tiago’s low-cost platform to save cost regarding the battery and powertrain.
After the Tiago electric’s launch later this year, Tata will look to add-on to their EV portfolio with the Nano electric, which has been spotted in Coimbatore recently. Tiago electric will compete with Mahindra’s e2o in a distinctive segment in the market. So, it may seem that Tata may have another winner in its hands, if they at least price the car aggressively in order to make people to sit up and take notice of this segment.
