The fourth generation of the Hyundai Tucson is set for a global debut sometime next year. As per reports, Hyundai will be bringing it to our market in 2021. The new Tucson was spied undergoing testing in South Korea recently.
Looking at its pictures, the new Tucson is wrapped in camouflage and looks a bit different compared to the outgoing model. In fact, it looks similar to the fuel-cell powered Nexo SUV from the automaker’s stable. We can see an aggressive design theme followed for the new Tucson, featuring a new set of LED DRL’s and squared-off wheel arches.
Hyundai will be offering it in both 5-seat and 7-seat configurations globally. We are not yet sure whether the latter will make its way to our market. But what we can be sure is that the new Tucson will feature a plug-in hybrid or a full hybrid option.
As per reports, the Tucson will come powered by the same set of engines seen on the Elantra mid-size sedan. As of now, the Tucson is sold here via the CBU route. It will be interesting to see whether Hyundai will make up their mind on manufacturing it here.
If they do so, the Tucson may see a significant cut in price due to the current tax rates, which have been lowered recently. Prices are expected to be in the Rs.15-20 lakh range (ex-showroom, India), similar to the outgoing model. The new Tucson will rival the likes of the Jeep Compass, Honda CR-V and Mahindra XUV500 in its segment.
Currently, the Tucson is marketed here as a premium SUV here, unlike in other markets, where it is sold as a mid-size SUV. This is because Hyundai discontinued the Santa Fe in India due to poor sales numbers. But there is talk of the Santa Fe making a comeback to the market, meaning that it will regain its place as Hyundai’s premium offering in the SUV segment here.
