In a surprise unveiling, Tata Motors dropped the covers of the production-spec Harrier officially, a mid-size SUV meant to take the fight to market leaders such as the top-spec Hyundai Creta, along with mid-variants of the Jeep Compass and the Mahindra XUV500.

Bookings for the company’s new flagship SUV has already commenced online and at its authorised dealerships for a down payment of Rs. 30,000. The Harrier is scheduled for India launch in January-2019 with a price ranging from Rs. 16 – Rs. 21 lakh OTR. The first Tata Harrier has rolled-off the production line in Pune.
The assembly line for the Tata Harrier was built on a short time of 6 months. The new assembly line adopts the best manufacturing practices for its new flagship from Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) with 90% automation levels with more than 100 KUKA and ABB robots. Designed at Tata Motors’ design studio at the company’s Pune plant, Tata Harrier production is underway at the same manufacturing plant.
Just like the H5X concept at Auto Expo 2018, the Harrier too features wide wheel arches, alloy wheels, distinctive bonnet creases and a large windscreen. At the biennial event, Design chief Pratap Bose said at the concept’s presentation that 80-85% of the design is going into production, and now he has fulfilled the promise. The reactions to the overall exterior design on social media are largely positive.
When launched the Tata Harrier is likely to be slot above the Hexa as the company’s flagship model.
Tata Harrier will be the first-ever production model to embodying the company’s IMPACT 2.0 design language. It is based on a modified version of Jaguar Land Rover’s D8 platform. According to the company, the Harrier comes with best in class space, driving dynamics, AC cooling, off-road capability, etc…
Powering the new Harrier will be an FCA-sourced 2.0-litre Multijet II turbo-diesel engine that has been branded or marketed as ‘Kryotec’, and it has a maximum power output of 140 PS. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual and a Hyundai-sourced 6-speed automatic unit. Both 2WD as well as 4WD options will be on offer.
