India’s top car maker, Maruti Suzuki, is considering to build a seventh factory in the western state of Gujarat with a production capacity of one million units, local media reported on Wednesday.
Senior management of Maruti Suzuki met with the Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday and expressed interest to set up a manufacturing plant in the state with an initial investment on 60 billion rupees ($1.3 billion), the Economic Times and Business Standard newspapers said. The company also uses the Mundra port for exports and with a plant nearby, it would end up saving a lot of money on logistics.
“We looked at options where we could possibly build a new plant and had a very positive interaction with the Gujarat government. We have other options as well except Gujarat so we will take a firm decision in the next three to four months,” RC Bhargava, Maruti Suzuki Chairman, said.
If Maruti Suzuki builds a plant in Gujarat, it would be the first one outside of Haryana, where they have been present since the company’s inception in 1983.
