We have been constantly reporting about the relationship between BMW and Toyota, previously both the parties have joined hands for joint development of a fuel cell system, powertain electrification and research into lightweight technologies. On the end-2011, Toyota boss Akio Toyoda and BMW chief Norbert Reithofer signed a memorandum of understanding pledging to expand their existing co-operation.
Now the companies will embark on a long-term link-up that will include joint development of architecture and components for a future sports car. Although Toyoda and Reithofer didn’t elaborate on details of that aspect of the deal, the link-up could potentially pave the way for the revival of either the Toyota Supra or the smaller Celica.
The Supra, which was last built in 2002, could be based on the platform that underpins the BMW 6-series, while a Celica could be spun off from 3-series architecture.
Commenting on this signing, Norbert Reithofer, BMW board member said that this joint venture will strengthen the position and bring out more sustainable future technologies. On the other hand, Akio Toyoda, the president of Toyota Motor Corporation seemed very excited about this joint venture and stated that, with this both the companies will be able to stand true to their goal of delivering better cars every time.
Meanwhile on March this-year, the BMW Group and Toyota had signed a binding agreement on collaborative research in the field of next-generation lithium-ion battery cells. In addition, both the companies entered into a contract under which the BMW Group will supply highly-efficient 1.6 -litre and 2.0-litre diesel engines to Toyota Motor Europe, starting in 2014.
