After months of spyshots – including some of the interior – the facelifted Mahindra Thar has finally been launched in its home market India at a starting price of Rs 8.03 lakh (ex-showroom, Nasik).
First things first, step inside – the bulk of the changes are situated in interior, with a new dual-tone dashboard, new lockable glovebox and provision for a 2-DIN audio system in the centre console that gets ‘THAR’ embossed and a new 3-pod instrument cluster with some chrome embellishment. The seats are new, a few cup holders are added, and the steering wheel, gear lever, air-con controls and the handbrake lever are borrowed from the Bolero.
On the outside, the Thar facelift gets new front & rear plastic bumpers instead of metal ones, new butch-looking wheel arches, clear lens headlamps, new rugged tubular side footsteps and new turn indicators on the front wheel arches. The major change on the facelifted Thar is seen in its side profile — the canopy is now tilted from the back. A total of five shades are on offer – Red Rage, Fiery Black, Mist Silver, Rocky Beige and Diamond White.
Powerplants for the 2015 Thar remains the same with the CRDe version powered by a 2.5-litre diesel engine churning-out 105 BHP of power and 247 Nm of torque, whereas a 2.5-litre Direct Injection (DI) motor producing 63 BHP and 182.5 Nm of torque. Both the engines come mated to a 5-speed manual transmission sending power to all-four-wheels via the BorgWarner All-Wheel Drive system. Built to tackle any terrain, the new Thar CRDe also retains its legendary off-road features like its extreme 440 approach angle, 270 departure angle and has a ground clearance of 200 mm.
Mechanically, the 2015 Thar gets the mechanical rear differential lock that has been included as per increasing consumer demand. However, the Thar DI does not get these upgrades as of now looking at the price sensitivity of the buyers.
