Today, Mercedes-Benz has launched the all-new 2014 S-Class (W222) luxury sedan in India for a princely amount of Rs 1.57 crore (ex-showroom Delhi). The ‘best car in the world’ is currently available in a single trim (S500) in India and will be followed soon by another variant S350 CDI diesel by the second half of 2014. Surprisingly, all 125 units of the limited Launch Edition of the new S-class sedan have already been booked, in just a matter of 16 days and orders placed henceforth will be delivered only in April-2014.

Up-till the previous fifth generation, the S-Class had only one concept that is to debut Merc’s latest technology and most advanced in gadget wizardry, apart from revised design. But now on the sixth-generation S-class has the difficult task of not just replacing the old S-class, but too resemble the no longer existing Maybach luxury brand. The rear-end resembles the Maybach while in its entirety the 2014 S-Class is an automobile of elegance and grace. However, compared to Bentley and Rolls-Royce, it is possible that this S-class will simply fail to excite or create the extra sense of luxury that’s required.

Talking about the cosmetic changes that have been introduced in the facelift S500 it would not be wrong to say that company has introduced all new features in this facelift keeping the existing market conditions in concern. The front fascia has been blessed with newly designed grille, new bumpers, full LED headlight followed by LED fog lamps. The side profile has been given aerodynamic looks along with body lines which touch the arched roofline on rear side. Its drooping roofline offers a more couple like stance while the car sits on 10 spoke wheels with a brand new design.

On the inside, the S-class is packed to the gills with advanced tech. A 24-speaker Burmester audio system, reclining, massaging, heated and cooled seats, Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity, night vision assist, adaptive cruise control, full LED headlamps, a panoramic sunroof, four-zone climate control and an air suspension to name a few. Besides all these latest features company has also paid proper attention towards integration of safety measures and now this sedan is blessed with night view assist, eight airbags, adaptive brake with hold and ASR, and dynamic cornering control system.

The most astounding fact is that all the bulbs of interior cabin are being replaced by the 300 LEDs and so by virtue of all these features, it is on the verge of becoming ‘Best Car in the World’. The regular battery founds no place in it, instead an lithium-ion one makes its entry in the plush paradise. Mercedes Benz has also claimed that, this time around, its engine has been tweaked in such an impressive manner that it would consume atleast 20% less fuel as compared to previous version. Plus, since only the long wheelbase version is sold in India, legroom at the back is quite outstanding.

Under the hood of the Mercedes-Benz S 500 sedan sits a twin-turbocharged 4,663cc V8 petrol engine that puts out 460bhp and a peak torque of 700Nm. Power is delivered to all-four-wheels via 4MATIC all wheel drive. Transmission is taken care by 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. 0-100 kmph is achieved in just 4.4 seconds while top speed is limited to 250 kmph. In simple words it can be said that the new S-Class is all set to offer tough competition to its contenders BMW 7-Series and Audi A8. Each top-of-the-line S500 variant will be imported as a CBU from Germany.
