Mercedes finally confirms death of Maybach

Mercedes finally confirms death of Maybach

End last-year we reported our readers that Daimler’s CEO Dr. Dieter Zetche confirmed to AutoWeek (Detroit automagazine) that the Maybach brand will officially be killed in 2013, but the company never really officially confirmed the death of the brand.

Last-week, Daimler and Mercedes finally ended the silence and confirmed the death of Maybach. Since everyone already knew that Maybach was going to die, Daimler didn’t even drop a press released confirming the death. Instead, a price list was released with the word ‘Discontinued’ next to all the five Maybach models offered in the US – the 57, 57 S, 62, 62 S and Landaulet.

Mayback was brought back to life by Mercedes-Benz in 2002 after the company failed to buy Rolls-Royce and Bentley from Vickers – which sold the two brands to Volkswagen. Volkswagen eventually sold Rolls-Royce to BMW.

Volkswagen India recently launched their new Touareg SUV at Rs 58.5 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The Touareg is being imported to India as a CBU which is one of the reasons behind the premium pricing of this car. However, the new Touareg is 40mm longer and about 200kg lighter than the model it replaces. Surprisingly, it has seating for five unlike the BMW X5 which is a seven seater and it will directly compete with the likes of the recently-launched Mercedes ML-Class & BMW X5. In India, the Touareg will be available only in a 3.0-litre V6 TDi diesel engine option. This V6 diesel engine produces 45 PS of peak power between 3800-4400 RPM and 550 Nm of peak torque between 1750-2250 RPM. This engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox and returns an ARAI certified mileage of 12.08 kmpl. The new Volkswagen Touareg V6 TDi is 220kmph fast and accelerates 0-100 kmph in just 7.43 seconds. It is equipped with a Bluetooth audio system, fully-powered seats with memory, a touch-screen audio system that doubles up as a screen for the reverse camera, and a dual-zone climate control system. It also comes with keyless entry and go, a panoramic sunroof, switches in the boot to both lower the rear suspension for easy loading, and drop the rear seats for more boot space. Automatic Bi-Xenon headlamps with cornering lights are standard on the new Touareg. The safety is also not compromised here and has been blessed with features like Electronic Stability Control (ESP), ABS with brake assistant, ASR and EDL & EDTC.  It comes with Driver & Passenger airbags along with side airbags front with curtain airbags for front & rear passengers. The new Touareg will have a permanent all-wheel drive ‘4 motion’ with self-locking central differential, engine immobilizer and height adjustable front seats. Commenting on the occasion Mr. Arvind Saxena, Managing Director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars, said – “India is a key market for our overall strategic growth plans and we are sure that the launch of the best products will affirm our commitment to provide the latest technologies and high value to our Indian customers.”   Checkout more pictures below the jump.   Also see -  Spied – New Volkswagen Touareg undergoing final rounds of testing (video)   See more pictures of new Volkswagen Touareg -
