The former F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton drove his McLaren F1 car through the streets of Bandra-Kurla complex in an exhibition run in Mumbai. Eager motorsports enthusiasts, Vodafone India customers and general public alike converged at the venue to witness something yet to be seen on the streets of Mumbai. This was the first time that Mumbai has seen this kind of night street racing and that too by an International Formula 1 Champion.
The rains didn’t dampen the Ace performer Lewis Hamilton as he sped through the Bandra Kurla Complex on Sunday evening leaving a multitude of Mumbaikars mesmerized. The British driver in his Vodafone McLaren Mercedes enthralled a crowd of over 60,000 fans while performing hot laps and donuts as well while a few lucky Vodafone customers even got a chance to ride along with Hamilton in his Mercedes AMG during the Vodafone Speedfest event.
After the event, a visibly thrilled Lewis Hamilton said –
“It’s amazing how each time I come to India, the experience gets better. I feel privileged to have presented India’s first night street-race show on behalf of Vodafone McLaren Mercedes. The fans in Mumbai are simply the best and the unbridled love and adulation that I receive here in India is addictive and makes me want to come back for more action and adventure.”
The 1.5 km stretch of the Bandra-Kurla complex main road was done up to resemble a race track, complete with stands and a pitstop. The area was filled to its maximum limit possible as Hamilton, fresh from his success at the Italian GP and Singapore GP put up a superb performance and later mingled with fans and Vodafone finalists in the Vodafone Drive into the Big League Contest. Hamilton was encouraged by the enthusiasm and fervor shown by fans in India to the extent that he is eagerly looking forward to racing in Indian at the upcoming Indian GP which is scheduled for the last weekend of October 2012.
