Ever since November-2013, there has been an unconfirmed reports on Tata Motors and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is jointly developing an entry-level premium SUV.
Now a recent report by AutoCarIndia states that the Tata Motors is working on two new Global SUVs codenamed the Tata Q501/Q502 internally which will share its floor pan and structural components with the Land Rover Discovery Sport. However, both the SUVs will have its own design and identity, and will be assembled at the Tata Motors plant in Pune.
As per the reports obtained, the Q501 would be a 5-seater compact SUV whereas the Q502 would be a 7-seater full-fledge SUV. It is believed to be powered by a Fiat-sourced 2.0-liter MultiJet II diesel engine producing 170 PS. Both 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions would be on offer along with 4×2 and 4×4 configurations.
The Q501 will compete with the Skoda Yeti, SsangYong Rexton, Honda CR-V and the Hyundai Santa Fe. While the bigger Q502 will rival the likes of the Isuzu MU-7, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, Ford Endeavour, Chevrolet Trailblazer and the upcoming next-gen Toyota Fortuner which will launch next-year in India.
Tata Motors has never had an SUV in its range before, although the national carmaker did come up with a premium crossover ‘Tata Aria’ in 2010, the things didn’t move as the car maker calculated and recently the car was discontinued from the market. Now the second generation Aria re-named as Hexa is set for launch in June-2016, it remains to be seen how well this new strategy works in favour of Tata Motors!
