Spied – Tata Nano diesel red-handed at the diesel station! (Updated)

Last month, Tata Motors sold 10,000 units of Tata Nano which is said to be a sold for the first time since launch. Now there has been an expectation about the Nano diesel, since long back. Thanks to Rohan, a reader of IndianAutosBlog.com who spotted the Tata Nano diesel at the diesel station and caught red-handed fueling-up.

From the images, the test mule has heavy cladding on rear bumper, mainly for better cooling and the front bumper also could be refreshed to offer better aerodynamics. The exhaust is likely to find a new place in Tata Nano diesel. Apparently, Tata has kept hold of the rear engine design of Nano also the market is abuzz with news that Tata Nano diesel might come out with a open-able hatch, like the available hatchbacks in the market.

The changes that are going to be incorporated in Tata Nano diesel are also going to find their way in the petrol trim of this hatchback. The give-away  that Tata Nano is coming with diesel engine was the clatter that the camouflaged car produced which was much different than the babble Tata Nano petrol trim made. It will be a while before this car becomes production ready and it will be launched sometime in 2013.

“We have worked with Tata Motors for Nano’s petrol version and we are working with it for the diesel version too. The car has a two-cylinder, 700cc engine which develops healthy power without compromising on fuel economy. Although official test figures have not been revealed, we expect it to run 40 km on one litre of diesel,” a Bosch India executive working on the Nano diesel project, said.

Under the hood, the diesel variant of Tata Nano has said is expected to be powered by twin cylinder 700cc DICOR engine (1405 cc four cylinder turbo diesel engine cut half), the engine will make its debut in Tata Ace DICOR although in detuned form. This 700cc DICOR engine is expected to produce a maximum power output of about 30 BHP, mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. Bosch is likely to provide the common rail direct injection system for diesel Nano. The diesel engine variant will be an icing on the cake with an expected mileage of close to 40 KMPL on Diesel, the Nano Diesel may become quite popular with a Sub-2-Lakh rupees price tag for the base variant.
