Overdrive.in spotted the Skoda Rapid, the Fabia based sedan caught during testing at outskirts of Pune. Codenamed VW SK251, the new C-segment challenger could be Skoda’s reasonably priced sedan. Overdrive reports that the Skoda Rapid is expected to unveil the vehicle during the 2012 edition of Auto Expo and sales could begin in March 2012.
The Rapid will not be based on the Visoin D concept as speculated earlier, Instead, it will get a Fabia look-alike front with similar headlamps, grille and the bumper. Further, the car is expected to be powered by the same 1.6 petrol and diesel engines which power the Vento. The 1.6 litre power-plant produces a healthy 106PS of power but will probably have different torque delivery characteristics in its new avatar.
The Rapid based on the Vento platform will hit roads in a couple of months. Expect the Rapid to undercut the Vento in terms of pricing and a few features may also be eliminated. The Rapid will have to battle the fierce competition in the C-Segment with the New Hyundai Verna, Honda City, Maruti SX4, New Fiesta and VW Vento. The Rapid may also be exported from India to international markets making it a global car.
