Mercedes-Benz recently introduced its latest SUV and the global style icon, the GLA-Class in India at prices starting from Rs. 32.75 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Built on the front-wheel drive platform used by the A-Class, B-Class and CLA-Class, the GLA-Class is the company’s first take on a premium compact SUV and is positioned to rival the similarly-sized Audi Q3, BMW X1 and Volvo V40 crossover.
Being the new entry-level SUV, the GLA exudes self-confidence and revels in its sporty dynamic design, cutting edge drive systems and unparalleled standard of luxury as well as safety which is unique in the segment. The GLA-Class will be available with two engine options; the 2.0-litre petrol and the most frugal 2.2-litre diesel.
Inside, the GLA’s A-Class roots are obvious. There is a 3-spoke multi-function steering wheel and the dashboard has five round air vents with galvanized bezels. The seats are upholstered in leather with the ones at the front being electrically adjustable and the rear one getting a 60:40 split function. Equipment includes an engine start/stop function, infotainment system with a 14.7 cm screen, 12-speaker Harman Kardon music system, satellite navigation, rear-view camera, panoramic sunroof and ambient lights.
The buyers will have a choice of two engine options: The petrol version is powered by the same 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder unit that is used in the E-Class 200 CGI. It delivers 181bhp and 300Nm of torque. The diesel, on the other hand is a 2.2-litre turbo diesel that belts out 134bhp and 300Nm of torque. The diesel has an ARAI efficiency figure of 17.9kpl; the figures of the petrol variant are at 13.8kpl. Both the engines are mated to a 7-speed dual clutch gearbox and send power to the front wheels only. A 4WD variant is not offered.
