Mahindra readying a new petrol engine, to power the XUV300

News has come that Mahindra and Mahindra are reportedly working on a new petrol engine for their line-up. This engine will fit in the automaker’s compact SUV range, which includes the XUV300 and the TUV300. Mahindra is officially expected to unveil the motor by the end of the year.

The new GDI turbo-petrol will be BS6 compliant and will spit-out more power and torque.

As per reports, the engine will be a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder, turbocharged petrol motor. It will receive a Direct Injection (DI) technology, which will result in more power and better fuel economy. Sources reveal that this engine can make upto 130 BHP of power along with 230 Nm of torque.

This would make it the most powerful motor in its segment. At present, the 1.0-litre turbocharged unit of the Ford Ecosport holds the distinction, having power output of 125 BHP. Coming back to the engine, it will gain a headstart of 20 BHP and 30 Nm compared to the existing 1.2-litre petrol motor of the XUV300.

The new engine will be more expensive than the current XUV300 MPFI turbo-petrol.

Mahindra will offer it in both manual and automatic transmissions. Though it has not yet been confirmed, we can expect it to happen soon. The TUV300 is touted to receive a minor facelift by end-2019, so Mahindra may fancy their chances of powering the vehicle with this motor.

The motor will comply to the ongoing BS-VI emission norms here. The XUV300 rivals the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Ford Ecosport, Tata Nexon and the recently launched Hyundai Venue. It remains to be seen whether the new motor could help Mahindra in gaining more sales numbers for the XUV300 or not.
