Bentley revealed a new convertible concept called the Grand Convertible Concept at the 2014 Los Angeles Motor Show last-month. Bad news? It’s only a concept. With that said, we believe Bentley would be insane to not put this into production as a market for it definitely exists and the car itself looks more than ready for the road.
Previous rumors suggested Bentley was working on a Mulsanne convertible to match Rolls-Royce’s move of having a Phantom Drophead Coupe for quite some time. This would also be the first big-bodied Bentley convertible since the Bentley Azure convertible of the 1990s and 2000s.
Due to its Mulsanne roots, the Grand Convertible Concept is just a Mulsanne with its head cut off and two less doors, and it’s simply epic.
Under the hood sits a traditional 6.75-litre, twin-turbo V8 engine with 530 hp and has so much torque it’s actually kind of funny. Just how much, you ask? Try 1,100 Nm of it. The ZF 8HP eight-speed automatic from the Mulsanne is the likely candidate to transfer all that power to the rear wheels.
As expected from Bentley, you get an array of handcrafted goodness all around as the Grand Convertible exudes this craftsmanship, luxury and build quality that just isn’t matched in any other market.
Commenting at the event, Bentley, CEO Wolfgang Durheimer, said –
“We are eagerly awaiting the response of our customers to this car. We will ensure that this car – if it reaches the roads – will be a highly exclusive, extremely limited collector’s piece.”
