Famous television and movie star Rowan Atkinson, better known to us as Mr Bean, had a very lucky escape last night after he crashed his McLaren F1 supercar and it caught fire.
According to the sources, the actor lost control and the car spun numerous times before crashing into a tree and then a road sign.
The accident took place near Peterborough in England and the 56-year-old actor walked away from the ditched F1 while a passing motorist looked after him after crash and took him to a hospital nearby. According to reports, he was taken to Peterborough District Hospital in Cambridgeshire where was treated for a minor shoulder injury.
This event comes off as a little ironic since the actor just appeared on an episode of the most recent season of Top Gear UK for the “Star in a Reasonably Priced Car” segment.
“People would assume that in the reasonably priced car I will be very good when there’s absolutely no guarantee of that whatsoever,” said Atkinson during his segment after completing the challenge and being the fastest actor around the Top Gear track.
This is the second accident that Atkinson has had in this McLaren, the previous occasion being in 1999 when the front end of the car was smashed in a collision with a Rover Metro. Perhaps he should stick to yellow Minis? After all, this highly sought after McLaren is a serious piece of machinery.
Rowan Atkinson’s garage includes a vintage Rolls-Royce, Aston Martins Audi A8 and a Honda Civic Hybrid. Apart from that he had written guest articles for car magazines.
One car Atkinson has said he will not own is a Porsche: “I have a problem with Porsches. They’re wonderful cars, but I know I could never live with one. Somehow, the typical Porsche people—and I wish them no ill—are not, I feel, my kind of people. I don’t go around saying that Porsches are a pile of dung, but I do know that psychologically I couldn’t handle owning one.”
Refresher – The 468kW V12-engined McLaren F1 held the honour of being the fastest car in the world in the 1990s, with its recorded top speed of 386km/h. It can also get from 0-96km/h in only three seconds.
Made from extremely lightweight materials and further distinguished by its three-seat layout in which the driver sits in the middle, only 100 F1s were ever built, making it a collector’s item of note.
