Swedish car manufacturer, Volvo is known to herald new safety techniques each time a new car is launched, this time around, they have pioneered a working concept for an autonomous self-parking car. This new car feature is demonstrated with the use of their new V40.

With the autonomous parking concept technology, the drivers no longer need to withstand the time-consuming task of finding a vacant parking space. Just drop the car off at the entrance to the car park, activate Autonomous Parking app on your smart phone and the car does the tedious work for you.

This allows the car to find and park itself without the driver inside, while Volvo’s existing auto brake and vehicle/pedestrian detection will actively interact safely and smoothly with other cars and pedestrians along the way.

On the process, the vehicle uses sensors to localize and navigate to a free parking space, while this procedure can be reversed when the driver sends the signal to “pick me up”, again through a mobile phone command.

Do see the video below how it works. The autonomous parking feature is still in its development stage though the company has stated that this feature will be seen in their all-new XC90 which is set to debut by the end of 2014. Meanwhile, Volvo as developed a host of online resources and information that can be found at Mill Volvo cars
