Tata Motors today revealed the sleek-looking TaMo Racemo Concept which is the company’s first sportscar that is race-car-inspired with elements of Tata’s impact design language, designed at the Tata Motors studio in Turin, Italy.
The Racemo is built on a patented MOFlex Multi-Material Sandwich structure developed by Marcello Gandini that gives greater freedom in surface design and more efficient large-scale part integration. This leads to modularity and faster readiness for new vehicles. Tata Motors say this is being used for the first time in the automotive industry for passenger vehicles.
The company has already applied trademark rights for other products in the TaMo range that could go by these nomenclatures such as; TaMo Store, TaMo Go, TaMo Air, TaMo Play and TaMo Flex. To underline the exclusivity, the RaceMo will be restricted to just 250 units and might go on-sale before 2017 ends at price of around Rs. 25-30 lakhs.
Front fascia features sleek Bi-LED headlights, an aggressive nose and a dynamic front bumper with large intakes. On the side, the low-slung profile and scissor doors add to the appeal and so do the large black-painted alloy rims. At the rear, the Racemo has round LED taillamps, a centrally-mounted exhaust, a contrasting engine cover with intake holes and an aggressive diffuser.
On the inside, the Racemo gets a dual-tone layout, with red inserts at various places. It will have advanced navigation, predictive maintenance, remote monitoring and over-the-air updates using Microsoft cloud-based technologies. The vehicle owner will interact with these tech bits via three screens in the instrument area. Like a modern-day supercar, most of the functions are integrated on the steering wheel.
In true sportscar fashion, it is mid-engined (engine behind the front axle) vehicle, something that will be a first for the brand. In fact, it has a 1.2-litre, turbocharged Revotron 3 cyl petrol engine that develops 187 BHP @ 6,500 rpm and 210 Nm of torque @ 2,500 rpm. The power is fed to the rear wheels via a 6-speed AMT with paddle shifters and push button reverse. Tata Motors claims that the Racemo can do a 0-100 KMPH sprint in less than 6 seconds. Top speed is expected to be around 220 KMPH.
Measuring 3,835 mm long, 1,810 mm wide and have a height of 1,208 mm. It has a wheelbase of 2,430 mm and a turning radius of 5.8 mm. The Racemo comes with a ground clearance of 165 mm and this is important as far as Indian road conditions, which means it will be easily usable on a day-to-day basis. The company hasn’t revealed the weight as yet, however it is expected to be light.
The Racemo is equipped with an independent double wishbone suspension setup all-round. It gets disc brakes on all four wheels and is equipped with ABS and EBD. The front has 205/50 R17 tubeless radial tyres while the rear gets 235/45 R18 tubeless radials. It has fuel tank capacity of 40 litres.
As far as safety is concerned, the Racemo features disc brakes at the front and the back and will get an electric park brake. On the safety front, it will get dual-airbags, ABS and EBD. It is built with integrated crash safety protection that meets the upcoming Indian regulations. It will feature 3-point seatbelt as standard with the option of 4-point racing harness.
The company has unveiled two versions – the Racemo and the Racemo+. The Racemo+ is a track focused, stripped out version that’ll soon feature in Microsoft’s Forza Horizon 3 on your XBOX, making it the first Indian car to be available on this platform.
Tata Motors is no stranger to sportscars, even before the buyout of JLR, as at the beginning of new millennium two Aria concepts saw the light in Geneva but none of them met the production lines. This time around though, in its 20th year of participating in Geneva, the TAMO performance brand pledges to create a new dimension for the resilient Indian manufacturer.
