Maruti Suzuki to import Fiat’s 1.6-litre diesel engine from 2014

Car market leader Maruti Suzuki is looking forward to import more powerful 1.6-litre Multijet diesel engine from Fiat Italy starting next year. The 1.3-litre Multijet diesel engine is already developed here in our country, so the company is planning to initially import the 1.6-litre diesel engine from Fiat. If the response are good, then it might be locally manufactured. According to the Financial Express, the 1.6-litre turbo diesel engine will be launched in SUVs and sedans.

As per Kenichi Ayukawa, Maruti’s MD & CEO who stated that though Suzuki is developing its own diesel engines, but its obvious that Maruti’s in-house four-cylinder 1.6-litre oil burners could not be launched before 2016. Thus, the import of the 1.6-litre Multijet diesel engine could be a stop gap arrangement for Maruti Suzuki, until the arrival of Suzuki’s homegrown turbo diesel engines. Maruti Suzuki’s first 800cc diesel engine is expected to hit the market by end-2014 or early-2015. However, the other diesel engines – 1.2-litre, 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre capacity are still under development.
