Volkswagen to revamp Indian product strategy, affordable cars lined up

German automaker Volkswagen is seriously looking on India and are planning a slew of affordable launches in the next couple of years. Reports suggest that Volkswagen will invest Rs. 7600 crore to develop new India-spec products here. The company, just like other automakers, is also considering to develop electric vehicles.

In August-2017, Volkswagen had to call-off a deal with Tata Motors to jointly develop affordable cars in India. This is due to the high expenses required for the project. Currently, Volkswagen is planning to build an engineering centre for product development here in India. The company will also invest to set-up a new manufacturing facility in its plant, located in Chakan, Pune.

Volkswagen, along with Skoda, will use the MQB-AO platform, which will be heavily localized. Sources say that Volkswagen will make an Indian version of the Up! and launch it at an affordable price. There are also chances of a Skoda badged Up! coming to India.

As per Volkswagen, the automaker will bring a premium hatchback and a T-ROC based mid-size SUV to rival the Hyundai Creta. At present, Volkswagen will bring the next-generation Polo hatchback and Virtus sedan here in mid-2018. So, we can expect a few surprises from Volkswagen’s stable.
