Triumph apologises for the lower power figures, updates new ones and offers compensation too

Triumph India has been facing quite a few issues concerning the lower power delivery of its models in India. The website and manuals of the bike had Europe specific details but all of them have now been corrected. But what the whole issue has done is that it has put away many prospective buyers from the brand and hurt the loyalty of many currently owning Triumph bikes.

The British motorcycle brand has finally owned up to the fact that its India-specific power figures are different from the global ones. The bikes that have been affected by it are Bonneville, Street Triple, Speed Triple, Daytona 675R and Daytona 675 ABS. After undergoing Automotive Research Association of India’s (ARAI) power output test procedure, new power figures have come up and they have finally been updated on the company’s India-specific website.

Triumph has also stated that all the bikes sold in India till now came with the power figures that have now been updated on the website which are way less than the European counterparts. People have been buying these thinking that they were buying higher power bikes but as it turns out, the company has been selling lower power bikes. The company stated that the detuned engine was brought to India to better cope with the low quality fuel available in our market.

“It is an error of communication and we should not have used the EU specifications on our website,” Vimal Sumbly, managing director, Triumph Motorcycles India told Hindustan Times. And also said on its Facebook page that the Street Triple sold in India has always been the 85PS variant, and that it understood it has created some confusion with customers. “We request our customers to kindly allow us some time to review and revert on the same,” it said.

Triumph has been doing wrong to the clients and the reason for the loss of power is being cited as the fact that the ARAI has stringent pollution and sound norms in place and compliance with these resulted in a lower power delivery. The Street Triple lost out on 26 Bhp, Daytona ABS lost out on 9 bhp and the Bonneville had to shed 6.8 bhp. As a part of the apology, the company is offering Rs 1 lakh cash back as compensation or buy official Triumph accessories worth Rs 1.5 lakh to the existing Street Triple owners.

The compensation package is only available for existing Street Triple owners who will be contacted by Triumph India officially to avail the above scheme. And new buyers will not be able to benefit as now it’s officially being mentioned in the brochure that the Street Triple has a power output of 79PS. Also contrary to many reports, Triumph India is not offering full cash back or hiking the power output to 106PS.

Amidst all this, what hurts the most is that why did a manufacturer like Triumph wait for an year to tell us the truth!
