Mahindra XUV Aero SUV-coupè confirmed for production – Report

Mahindra showcased India’s most affordable SUV-coupè, the XUV Aero concept at 2016 Auto Expo, and as expected, it did manage to garner some crowd. Now, the company is looking to develop this model in a bid to revive its sales numbers, which is seeing a marginal decrease in the last few months.

The head-turner, the XUV Aero SUV-coupè will finally make its way to a production flagship model, claims a report from ZigWheels. They also say that the XUV Aero prototypes will soon hit roads for real-world testing. Earlier the company did roll-out a model sketch of this concept car, giving us the proof that the launch of the production model is just around the corner. Further Mahindra’s managing director, Dr. Pawan Goenka has said that a pure electric powertrain is one of the options currently under consideration for the XUV Aero.

Similar to the BMW X6 and Mercedes GLC Coupe, this car also has a coupé-like sloping roofline which could entice buyers to the showroom. This will mean that the concept here will be positioned as at the top of the Mahindra’s lineup. However, the technical specs of the production model are unknown at the moment, but a report indicates only the availability of a pure electric variant, however, the tried-and-tested mHawk powertrain is logical to assume, the option of petrol variant can’t be ruled-out either.

On the exterior, the XUV Aero has a muscular stance similar to the XUV500 and a shrinking roofline giving it a coupé like-look. It remains to be seen whether the production car can retain some design cues from its concept sibling. The horizontal front lamps and the ‘grown up’ bumpers give the car a chunky look. The concept was created by Aero Designers, tells us about the product capabilities of Mahindra, who think this could be an ideal car to bring back their lost glory.

At the biennial event, Mahindra revealed that the XUV Aero was powered by the 2.2-litre mHawk engine tuned to deliver 210PS, and sprint from 0-100kmph in under 6 seconds with the ‘Next-Gen turbo boost’. This modern combustion system with low pressure EGR adaptability has improved NVH and better fuel economy, which could give it an edge among its rivals namely the Volkswagen Tiguan and Jeep Compass. Sources close to the publication claimed that the XUV Aero will go on-sale by late-2018 or early-2019.
